Tricia O’Brien is a Sonoma artist who is an experimental printmaker and painter who makes art from recyclable materials.  This series, Like a Flower and Imagined Flowers began as a protest to the war in the Ukraine and around the world.  Much like the 60’s “Flower Power” movement that condemned war and violence, her work seeks to bring attention to the displacement, death, and destruction of the planet that war inherently brings.

Monotypes and Monoprints are printed paintings, created by either printing plates which have been hand painted by the artist making each one unique and one of a kind.  A monotype is a single print pulled from a unique, unetched image from which a perfect second impression cannot be made (although a “ghost” of the original is possible). Monoprints begin with a repeatable matrix which is then manipulated by the artist before printing, resulting in unique images which include identical, repeatable elements.  There are several challenges involved in the Mono-Type/Mono-print process: the artist must prepare the plate rapidly or else the print can appear smeared and distorted; and the layer order of the painting will be reversed when printed.
